I Am So Smart, You Guys

I put a plate of one mini lasagna, some roasted potatoes and roasted parsnips into the oven and set it to low broil, just to warm them up. I pulled it out after about 5 minutes, just to check it (didn't want it to burn). The veggies were warm but the lasagna wasn't quite done so I went to tip them onto another plate. I picked up the straight from the oven HOT PLATE with my BARE HANDS. Needless to say, I dropped that sucker and ran to ice my hands. I'm quite lucky it didn't blister because that was a REALLY hot plate!! I am so awesome. . .

Friday Fun Facts

It's Friday and payday! Unfortunately it's the paycheck my rent comes out of (ugh), but only two weeks until my next paycheck that I do most of my shopping with!!
  • Tuesday morning I woke up and stopped eating candy and chocolate candy cold turkey. Turns out it wasn't that hard - I don't know why I thought it was?
  • I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow and I'm SO excited. My bangs need about 2/3rds chopped off. . . again.
  • I need to go pick up Stacy's birthday present and get it mailed to her. I WILL be on time this year!!
  • Went out to lunch with some of the girls from the office. Have you ever tried eatZi's? It's yummy! I made my own sandwich - roast chicken breast on ciabatta with ancho mayo, muenster cheese, lettuce, tomato and roasted red peppers. DELISH!
  • I'm still loving playing with my Urban Decay palettes. I went with a tuquoise and grey look today.
  • I also tried out the 24/7 liquid liner, and I like it! Went on nice and smooth, although it's waterproof and I'm not usually a fan.
  • My Enzo Angiolini pumps are out for delivery! I am quite excited. I'm just all sorts of excited today, aren't I?
  • This is repetitive, but I miss having a kitty. I say it alot because it's on my mind alot.
  • I'm looking forward to Sunday night TV. Four favorite shows on one night. I haven't had such a packed night since Thursday ruled my life in the not too distant past.
  • I'm contemplating the gym. At the very least, some yoga. I could do with a good stretch!
Ok, that's all my random thoughts for this Friday! Have a super awesome weekend =D

    Book Club

I love these online link parties =) I think it's a great way to share with others!! The book I just finished was Plum Lovin' by Janet Evanovich.

Mysterious men have a way of showing up in Stephanie Plum s apartment. When the shadowy Diesel appears, he has a task for Stephanie--and he s not taking no for an answer. Annie Hart is a relationship expert who is wanted for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Stephanie needs to find her, fast. Diesel knows where she is. So they make a deal: He ll help her get Annie if Stephanie plays matchmaker to several of Annie s most difficult clients. But someone wants to find Annie even more than Diesel and Stephanie. Someone with a nasty temper. And someone with unmentionable skills. Does Diesel know more than he s saying about Annie Hart? Does Diesel have secrets he s keeping from Stephanie and the two men in her life--Ranger and Morelli? With Stephanie Plum in over her head, things are sure to get a little dicey and a little explosive, Jersey style!

    My thoughts:
This is the second between the numbers novella. I love, love, love all the Stephanie Plum books, but this between the numbers series isn't doing it for me. I'm very aware of Ranger and Morelli's absence and I think that's what I liked the most in the numbers series - that love triangle and chemistry. Diesel just isn't the same. All the other usual suspects are there - Lula, Grandma Mazur and Bob the Dog. I'm not saying these books aren't good, they just aren't quite the same. They are still entertaining, and since they are just short and sweet, under 200 pages novellas it's a quick and easy read. If given the option, though, I'd choose the regular series.

    Hello Kitty Eyemask

Ok, I might look majorly creepy here, but you've got to admit the eyemask is kinda cute.
S thought it was weird. I thought it was fun! Goodnight =D

The Hunger Games - The Movie

I was at the midnight showing of the Hunger Games last Thursday with all the other crazy fans. I didn't see anyone in costume which was a slight bummer, lol!
    My beloved book!
There wasn't an empty seat in the theater. I really liked the book and just hoped it would do it justice. I was not disappointed. I don't have one complaint about the movie, except perhaps there was too little development of the relationship between Cinna and Katniss. It was like all of a sudden they were thick and thieves.
S will tell you it wasn't gory enough, wasn't graphic enough, wasn't enough like the book. . . but when you're going for a PG13 rating, you can't be all that graphic. Plus, I'm glad it wasn't that bad. My imagination isn't as graphic and gory as his so it was pretty much on par for me. But for a Spartacus fan, not so much. He did enjoy the movie though, despite too PG for his taste.

I think Jennifer Lawrence pretty much nailed the role - she definitely kicked some ass.
There should have been more Gale - he was definitely underutilized. I go back and forth between Team Gale and Team Peeta, but for the purposes of this book, I was Team Gale. I don't know why, Peeta just didn't grab my attention.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie and I think they did try to be as true to the book as they could. I can't wait to see the next two movies - I hope they are just as entertaining!

    Adventures at the DPS

This morning I had the pleasure of going to the DPS to change my address. I really don't ever bother with this since I move every year, but since I'm about to submit my citizenship forms, all things need to be up to date and match. I couldn't renew online because it had been over three years and apparently they make you go in. No big deal, I wanted a new picture anyway. One where I didn't look so chubby. There's about a 30lb difference between then and now!

I gathered all my documentation - passport, green card, SSN card, recent utility bill - because you can never take TOO much. I was about to leave the house, when I went to check my purse for my wallet. It wasn't there. I had a mini heart attack and started wracking my brain as to where it could be (this is at 645am, mind you). I remembered that I had taken just my wallet to Whole Foods on Monday and had just thrown it toward my purse when I got home instead of making sure to put it back in my purse, so chances were it was on the floor of my office.

Luckily I'm anal about being anywhere early, on time, and allowing for all sorts of disasters to occur. I was able to swing by my office and there was my wallet, on the floor. Lucky! It could have been stolen! So I grabbed it and headed to the DPS. Honestly, it was probably easier getting there from the office than trying to tackle 635 in the morning as google maps had suggested. I got there at 715am and there was already a line. I was probably the 20th person there, and the office didn't even open until 8am.

I stood there reading Plum Lucky until the doors opened. The line moved pretty quickly for the DPS, which was nice. I got my ticket and took a seat to wait for my turn. I was sitting in a row of three chairs in the left most chair. Some rather large man came huffing and puffing over and sat in the right most chair. I suppose he realized he forgot something because he gave a BIG SIGH, cussed, and shuffled back across the room. He returned, BIG SIGH, sat down, BIG SIGH and got out his phone.

I felt so bad for the person on the other end of his phone call. BIG SIGH
"I'm gonna be here all damn day" I doubt that
"I got here at 10 till 8 and the line was around the building!" did you really think there would be no line at the DPS?
"Go to this website! (insert website)" BIG SIGH "NO! All one word, NO SPACES!" you could offer up that information instead of assuming people know?
"(insert DL#)" BIG SIGH "NO! x-x-x-x-x 5! 3! I don't know why you can't hear me!" I don't know either, because everyone in the building could hear you
"There is no number next to the picture WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THERE IS NO NUMBER!" I'm not even kidding, the guy was yelling about that number that runs vertically next to the picture. It's there, so I guess his eyesight isn't.

By this point he got up, shuffled around the corner but it didn't matter, we could all still hear him perfectly. Someone asked him to stop yelling to which he replied "I'm about to start yelling a bit louder in a minute!" I think he was then asked to go outside. I was so distracted by him that I almost missed my number being called! He was just behaving so badly, I can't even believe grown adults act that way. I had to pass him on the way out and he was still on the phone, being a jerk. Never a dull moment at the DPS. I was outta there by 840a and at work by 9a. Not too shabby really, and my new picture looks pretty good!

    WIAW #13

It's time for WIAW! One day I'm going to learn to do cool things with my pictures. Collage-like 'n' stuff.
Anyway, here we go! I ate a bunch of delicious things in the past week, but not all on the same day. Forgive me for mixing and matching, but I had to share it all! It was another egg filled week.
Breakfast! S and I went out for breakfast on Sunday and here is what I ordered:
This is a toasted English muffin with artichokes, avocado, tomato, poached egg and topped with hollandaise sauce. There are some home fries/ranch potatoes/whatever they call them in your neck of the woods peeking out behind the main event.

    Delicious runny yolk
After I polished off every last bite of this, we headed home and I had my weekend cup of tea. It just so happens to be in a green mug! (No, I'm not a Dolphins fan - I stole this mug from my Dad who bought it on a trip to Florida way before I was born and my parents were still living in England).
Now for lunch. I had a black bean burrito from Whole Foods and it was pretty yummy. I had no idea it would be green until I unwrapped it - imagine my delight! Spinach wrap!
I thought I was buying veggie chips, so imagine my surprise when they turned out to be straws! No matter, they still taste the same. Potato, tomato and spinach.
    Inside my bur-rit-toooo.
So I've been drinking Sprite Zero lately and adding in some MiO. This flavor is called Green Thunder, and honestly I don't know how to describe it. But I like it! And it's good with Sprite!
And here is my dinner masterpiece. One spritzer made with Moscato and Sprite Zero, one steamed sweet pork bun, some roasted veggies topped with an over easy egg because I'm still on an eggy-veggie kick. Oh, this was SO delicious!
    Close up of the deliciousness.
What did you eat this week? Don't forget to head over to see Jenn at Peas and Crayons to see what everyone else has been eating!

    The Return of Mad Men

Like all the other crazy fans, I've been waiting for Mad Men's return with much anticipation. I liked (not loved) the Season 5 two hour premiere that aired last night. It seems to be an either love it or hate it kind of show. I don't think S would be interested. I find it interesting because I'm in the industry. I wonder why others not in Advertising find it interesting? The era? Nostalgia? Beautiful people and costumes? Whatever the reason, Don and the gang are back, albeit to a slowish start.
Anyway, in typical Mad Men fashion, the premiere did not pick up where the finale left off (also, if you haven't watched yet, you should stop reading because **SPOILERS** you have been warned). Nowhere in the episode were we blantantly made aware of the year, but I read it's now 1966, Megan and Don are married (too bad, I really wanted to see that wedding), they have a new place, she's a junior copywriter at the agency which still seems to be flailing just a tad since Lucky Strike bailed last season.

We also see Joan as a new mother and looking pretty hot when she stops by the office; Pete moved to the suburbs with his wife and daughter; all the other characters don't seem to have changed much. I did find it amusing that Roger and Jane seem to not be as hot for each other as when they first met - a couple jabs were exchanged. Pryce confuses me. I don't understand what his game is. One person clearly absent from the premiere was Betty Draper. I, for one, am glad, because I really dislike her. I didn't miss her sour face and selfish behavior one little bit. I wouldn't be the least bit sad if she never came back.

The song heard 'round the twittersphere - Zou Bisou Bisou. Megan did a little show and song as a present for Don in front of all the guests at the surprise party which we later find out he did not like because he doesn't like to mix business and private life. This causes some major tension between the two newlyweds, causing Megan to go home from work the next day, Don to follow, an argument ensues and then some heavy making up on the ruined white carpet.
Don seems like a whole different person with Megan. Perhaps because she doesn't suck the life and happiness from a room like Betty.

As far as the agency goes, it seems like Pete is busting his ass to gain new clients and Roger is interferring because he has nothing to do. I'm not a huge fan of Pete so I found it amusing when he smashed his nose into the pillar in his office. Oops. Since it's the mid 60's, it's the middle of the civil rights era and African Americans are protesting workplaces that discriminate and are applying places that aren't. SCDP put a fake ad in the Times to jab at Y&R which ends up backfiring as their lobby ends up full of African Americans wanting to apply for the job. If they don't accept the resumes and applicants, they appear racist; on the other hand they don't have the cash flow to hire another body. It will be interesting to see how that all plays out.
    Welcome back.

This is how little I usually move around whilst sleeping. Notice the other side of the bed is barely touched.
Here's how I slept the night of the crazy storm last week. I think tossing and turning would be an understatement.

    Madden Girl Shoes

My shoes from ideeli finally arrived. They are even cuter in person and pretty comfortable, although I'll have to break in the backs so I don't get blisters.
I love the zipper and chain detail. I've never had a pair of shoes that are so "edgy".
And you know I'm a sucker for animal print!!
I also spied another pair of shoes from ideeli, but I can't decide if I should splurge yet. . . anyway, loving these flats!!

    Urban Decay/Lush Haul

I recently received my tax refund (yay!) but I didn't go completely crazy and limited myself to a preset budget. Here's what I ordered from Urban Decay/Amazon.
Urban Decay Book of Shadows IV
It came in such a pretty box where you lift up the lid to expose a mirror and butterflies.
The drawer pulls out to expose the shadows, liner, mascara, primer and some keychain mp3 player.
I really like all these shadows - definitely wearable and not too crazy!
Liquid liner in black. I've been hesitant to use this yet because I find it hard to draw a straight line with liquid liner so I need to practice with this wand before doing my daily makeup with it!
The box also came with a mini mascara. I like the curve of the brush and the consistency of the mascara. I'm not sure how "curling" it is because my lashes are curled to begin with, but regardless I like it.
I've been wanting to try this eye primer for a long time now, but could never bring myself to fork over the money, so I'm glad it came with a sample!
It did a pretty decent job, one of the best I've tried. My eyeshadow did not crease and lasted several hours longer than usual - so far so good! We'll see how it lasts on a workday.
Here's my arm with all the colors swatched. They're all pretty different and bright. I like variety =)
    Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette
I have been lusting after this since it came out a few months ago. I really like this picture because you can see me in the mirror =D
I made sure that none of these shades duplicated with the Book of Shadows IV, so I have 28 brand new colors to play with! Although this is a lot of neutral colors, mainly tans and browns, I can mix and match and create different looks.
    Swatched on my arm.
I used Bootycall for the highlight, YDK on the lid and Busted for the crease here.
This palette came with a little lip gloss that is a nice light pink color and smells and tastes like peppermint.
I like the shimmer in it too!
I also went to Lush on my lunch break earlier this week and picked up the following things to try out. I like how they use organic products and nothing animal related, which I'm sure is better for us and the animals!
    I Love Juicy shampoo
This stuff is great. It smells delicious from all the fruit juices in it and it does leave my hair feeling really clean and not weighed down. My hair still feels clean on day 2, unlike before when I wasn't sure if I could really skip a day without my hair looking dirty.
    Veganese conditioner
I don't condition everytime I wash my hair so the first time I used it was the second time I washed my hair with I Love Juicy. The result was incredible. My hair is so soft, clean and the majority of my flyaways were no longer sticking out around my head. Amazing!
Ocean Salt body and face scrub
This stuff is pretty great. It felt good on my arms and elbows, but even better on my face. I just used a little because I didn't want to slough all the skin off my face or make it raw. It left my face feeling smooth and refreshed.
Pretty blue color! It smells good too. All fresh and clean.
    Fizzbanger bath bomb
This was so cool. It dissolved to turn the water blue-green color and smelt like apple cinnamon and toffee.
It made my skin smell good and soft and when in the water it made the skin feel slippery and smooth, it was a bit weird but fun! It also came with a fun little note inside (sorry it's blurry).
So that's all I bought for now. I'm loving everything so far! I'm looking forward to trying out new Lush products and experimenting with the eyeshadows!

    I Hate Calling 9-1-1

Don't worry, I'm fine. But I called today to report a freaking chair in the middle of 635 eastbound. I almost saw two wrecks happen because of it. Usually I don't bother because I hate calling 9-1-1 for non emergency things because I don't want to tie up the phone line for someone who really needs help. I also say to myself someone else probably called. Also, I get bad feedback which is really distracting and probably makes me sound stupid.

So I called because I felt I should. I asked for a non emergency number and the lady who answered started reciting a number to me. Well I can't write it down because I'm using one hand to drive and one to hold the phone (I knew I should have put my blue tooth on when I got in the car). So I said "There's a chair in the middle of the freeway!" She replied they already had that call and was in the middle of saying something else when I said "OK, thanks!" and hung up. It just makes me nervous, being on the phone with 9-1-1. I hope I never have to call them for a real reason.

Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

Which means Friday Fun Facts! This week went by pretty quickly and I'm very happy about that. I love you, weekend.
    • Saw The Hunger Games last night at midnight. Totally chowed down on nachos whilst watching. I think the movie did a great job of sticking to the book.
    • All my packages finally arrived in the mail, so now I can do my haul post that I've been dying to do for a week!
    • I was a mature adult and saved about half of my tax refund.
    • I still haven't caught up on Grey's and Private Practice. It might be time to let them go. . .
    • Stacy is back from San Francisco today which is GREAT because going through the work day without her to talk to online is a bummer.
    • Since my bangs are no longer bangs, I scheduled a hair cut for next Saturday. I was watching the Kelly Clarkson What Doesn't Kill you video and realized I miss having cute'n'sassy bangs ;-)
    • Nothing new planned for the kitchen - might make some lasagna cupcakes this weekend. Also have some ripe banana's that need using. Perhaps some banana bread?
    • I neglected the gym this week, so will be back on it tomorrow (maybe tonight?!)
    • I am now obsessed with the Draw Something app. I really suck at drawing with my finger, but luckily the people I play with are on my wavelength!
    • I tried a new Indian restaurant with my brother and his girlfriend on Monday night. Doh, I always forget to take pictures when I'm out with others. Anyway, it was pretty good. I'm glad I found a new place to go since my old favorite place really let me down last time.
    • I have recruited my mom to make me a shirt. Have I mentioned that? I'm super excited. I picked out the fabric, now all I have to do is go buy it and hopefully she'll get started =) She's pretty awesome when it comes to dress making. I wish I had half her talent. And a sewing machine.
    • Anyone else find it so hard to concentrate on  work on a sunny Friday afternoon?
Well, apparently I had a lot to say this week! I hope everyone has a super weekend. I hope the weather stays nice and sunny but cool (before the impending doom of the Texas summer is upon us!) Happy Friday!

I'm sure you've heard about this by now. . .

If you have been paying attention to any national news in the past week or so, I'm sure you've heard about Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed in Sanford, FL on February 26th whilst walking in a gated community where he was staying carrying only a can of iced tea and a bag of Skittles. A self appointed neighborhood watch man decided the 17 year old looked suspicious and pursued him despite law enforcement telling him not to. Apparently being armed with Skittles makes you dangerous nowadays, and may lead to being shot in cold blood.

I am pretty upset and angry about this. I rarely voice my opinions on topics like this, politics, race, things that can be controversial but this is just ludicrous. I despise racisim and judging people on outward appearance. I can't even believe that a man who shot an unarmed boy is still walking around a free man. The claim of self defense on the Stand Your Ground basis is useless because he was in pursuit. You can't claim self defense when you are the aggressor.

His body laid in the medical examiners office for three days. Law enforcement didn't think to call his parents by picking up his cell phone and calling ANY number listed in contacts. "Mom" or "Dad" would have been fine. Oh, but they did think to drug test the body. But not the shooter. Not the armed aggressor. He and his 9mm went home. This is just so disrespectful. A young man lost his life here, and the Sanford police department are treating it like nothing happened. Nothing. Until it garned the attention of the entire nation and federal government. I even read an article on the BBC website about this. Even now they're moving at the pace of snails.

The amount of evidence is mounting and it's been almost a month with no action. You can hear the gunshot on the 9-1-1 tape. You can hear 9-1-1 tell Zimmerman not to pursue. You have an unarmed dead kid. This might be a different story if Martin had been armed, but all he had was Skittles. SKITTLES! And as much as I hate to say it, this probably would have been a different situation and handled much differently if the murdered child was not black. It hasn't been determined if racial profiling was a factor in this (as far as I know), but you have to assume that Zimmerman judged Martin on his outward appearance seeing that he considered him to be "suspicious".

Check out this clip from Morning Joe where they discuss the situation. I don't always agree with Joe, but in this case I've never agreed with him more. What is taking the police department so long to make an arrest? How much longer? It does sound like they need some help down there. . .

I went to the movies last night, it was dark and I had my hoodie up. Lucky I wasn't shot, eh? Oh wait, I didn't have the new incredibly dangerous weapon, a bag of Skittles, in my hand. It's just ridiculous, you guys. Ridiculous.

    How I Rigged a Steamer

Yesterday I found these sweet pork buns, or Cha Siu bao, that I used to eat all the time at Dim Sum restaurants. I really like them, they might be my favorite thing (definitely the opposite end of the scale to chicken feet, ugh)! As soon as I spied them, I knew I had to get them. I was surprised because I was pretty sure only Trader Joe's or Asian markets stocked them. Way to go, Whole Foods!
Now here comes the problem. I didn't consider the fact I don't have a steamer when purchasing said buns. The traditional way would be in a bamboo steamer like they come in at the Dim Sum restaurants. What to do, what to do. The answer is always "Call Mom". So I did. This contraption below was basically inspired by her instructions.

I took a saucepan and filled in with 2-3 inches of water, but not so much that it was touching the colander/fry basket that I placed on top.
Then I wrapped foil around the edges to keep the steam from completely escaping through the holes in the side. I turned the water on and brought it to a slow boil.
    Place buns inside.
Cover the top with foil and steam for 10-15 minutes.
You guys, I'm shocked this worked. They came out pretty perfectly considering my ghetto rigged steamer contraption.
Warm all the way through, sweet, yummy dough filled with slightly sweet mildly bbq-y pork. YUM!
I cannot wait to buy these again, and you can bet it will be SOON.
    The End.
